2019 Minimum Wage Updates Plus Our At-a-Glance Chart

Effective January 1, 2019, 19 states and more than 24 cities and localities have raised minimum wages, with other states planning increases later in the year. These minimum wage increases could effect an estimated 5 million hourly-paid workers, representing nearly 5.4 billion dollars in increased wages.

States still using the federal minimum wage—which was set at $7.25 in 2009 under the Fair Labor Standards Act—include Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and West Virginia all have minimum wages that are higher than the federal minimum, but do not have any wage increase planned for 2019.

Minimum Wage Changes, State-by-State

Alaska

Alaska raised the minimum wage from $9.84 to $9.89 per hour effective January 1, 2019. This follows Alaska statute adjusting the minimum wage annually for inflation.

Arizona

Arizona has raised their minimum wage from $10.50 to $11.00 per hour effective January 1, 2019. The change applies to all untipped employees.

Arkansas

In November 2018, Arkansas voters approved a minimum wage increase to $11.00 per hour over the next three years. The law began with an increase from $8.50 to $9.25 on January 1, 2019.

California

California has raised its minimum wage for employers with 26 or more employees from $11.00 to $12.00 per hour. For employers with less than 26 employees, the minimum wage has been raised from $10.50 to $11.00. Both increases went into effect January 1, 2019.

Colorado

Colorado raised its state minimum wage with a ballot measure from $10.20 to $11.10 per hour, effective January 1, 2019.

Delaware

Delaware raised its minimum wage from its 2015 level of $8.25 per hour to $8.75, effective Jan 1, 2019, with another raise scheduled (to $9.25), effective October 2019.

District of Columbia

The District of Columbia will be raising its minimum hourly wage for non-tipped employees from $13.25 to $14.00 per hour and for tipped employees from $3.89 to $4.45, effective July 1, 2019, with additional increases scheduled for July, 2020.

Florida

Effective Jan 1, 2019, Florida employers are required to pay a minimum wage of $8.46 per hour, up from $8.25. For tipped employee, the minimum wage was increased from $5.23 to $5.44. This follows Florida statute adjusting the minimum wage annually for inflation.

Maine

Maine raised its minimum wage by ballot measure from $10.00 to $11.00 per hour, effective January 1, 2019.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts raised its minimum wage from $11.00 to $12.00 per hour, effective January 1, 2019, with incremental raises planned through 2023. For tipped employees, the minimum wage was raised to $4.35 per hour.

Michigan

Michigan voters chose to raise the state minimum wage from $9.25 to $9.45 per hour, effective March 29, 2019, while raising the minimum wage for tipped employees to $3.60 per hour.

Minnesota

Minnesota raised the minimum wage for employers with $500,000 or more in annual gross revenues from $9.65 to $9.86 per hour to adjust for inflation. For employers with less than $500,000 in annual gross revenues, the minimum wage was raised from $7.87 to $8.04. Both changes became effective January 1, 2019.

Missouri

Missouri increased minimum wage will rise incrementally each year to $12.00 per hour by 2023, per passed ballot measure. It starts with a rise from $7.85 to $8.60 per hour, effective January 1, 2019.

Montana

Montana has increased the minimum wage to adjust for inflation from $8.30 to $8.50 per hour effective January 1, 2019.

New Jersey

New Jersey raised its minimum wage from $8.60 to $8.85 per hour effective January 1, 2019. This follows New Jersey statute adjusting the minimum wage annually for inflation.

New York

New York state raised its minimum wages from $10.40 to $11.10 per hour, effective Dec. 31, 2018.

New York City

New York City has specific minimum wage laws. Here is a rundown of minimum wage increases in New York City, effective January 1, 2019:

  • For Long Island and Westchester employers, the minimum wage was raised $1.00 from $11.00 to $12.00 per hour.
  • For New York City employers with 10 or fewer employees, the minimum wage was raised by $1.50 from $12.00 to $13.50 per hour.
  • For New York City employers with 11 or more employees, the minimum wage was raised by $2.00 from $12.00 to $15.00 per hour.
  • For New York City fast food employers, the minimum wage was raised by $1.50 from $13.50 to $15.00 per hour.

Ohio

Ohio raised its minimum wage from $8.30 to $8.55 per hour, effective January 1, 2019. This follows Ohio statute adjusting the minimum wage annually for inflation.

Oregon

Oregon legislation has scheduled a series of annual inflation adjustments to the state minimum wage, through 2023. Effective July 1, 2019, the first set of increases are:

  • The standard state minimum wage will raise from $10.75 to $11.25 per hour.
  • Portland Metro Areas: minimum wage will raise from $12.00 to $12.50 per hour.
  • Oregon Non-urban counties minimum wage will raise from $10.50 to $11.00 per hour.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island raised its minimum wage from $10.10 to $10.50 per hour, effective January 1, 2019.

South Dakota

South Dakota adjusted the minimum wage from $8.85 to $9.10 per hour, effective January 1, 2019, in accordance with the Consumer Price Index cost of living increase. The hourly minimum wage for tipped employees in South Dakota increased $4.55 per hour as well.

Vermont

Vermont raised its minimum wage from $10.50 to $10.78 per hour, effective January 1, 2019. This follows Vermont statute adjusting the minimum wage annually for inflation.

Washington

Washington state raised its minimum wage from $11.50 to $12.00 per hour, effective January 1, 2019. Incremental increases are scheduled through 2020. Starting in 2021, minimum wages will be adjusted annually for inflation.
